Do I need an IDP to drive on Ko Lanta?
Yes. Thai law requires foreign tourists to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their original home licence. The correct format depends on your country: US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese drivers need the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP; UK and most EU drivers need the 1968 Vienna Convention format. You cannot obtain an IDP in Thailand — get it from your national motoring club before you travel. Driving without one risks a checkpoint fine and, far more seriously, voided insurance if you are in a crash.
Is it safe to drive on Ko Lanta?
Driving a car on Ko Lanta is manageable and far safer than riding a scooter. The main road is well-paved and lightly trafficked in the north. The main hazards are steep, winding roads south of Klong Nin, unlit stretches after dark, and the unpredictable behaviour of other road users — especially scooters. Drive during daylight, keep speeds modest, and take a car rather than a scooter if you have any doubt about your riding ability. See our guide to Ko Lanta beaches by car for a practical route around the island.
What side of the road does Thailand drive on?
Thailand drives on the LEFT, as in the UK, Australia and Japan. All rental cars are right-hand drive. Overtake on the right. If you are arriving from a right-hand-traffic country, give yourself a few extra minutes of adjustment after the car ferry before you increase speed.
Car or scooter — which is better for Ko Lanta?
A scooter makes sense for confident, motorcycle-licensed riders doing short hops between the northern beaches. A car is the better choice for families, anyone travelling with luggage, visitors heading to the steep southern bays, and anyone without a motorcycle endorsement on their licence (riding without one voids your insurance). With two or more people sharing, the price difference is modest. Read the full comparison in the section above.
What happens if the police stop me on Ko Lanta?
Slow down, roll your window down and have your home licence, IDP and passport ready together. Stay calm, stay polite, and stay in the car unless asked to step out. Officers check for valid documents, seatbelts, and signs of alcohol. If you receive a fine, accept the citation and pay it at the local police station — never offer cash directly to an officer. If you need English-language assistance at any stop, call Tourist Police on 1155.
Where can I buy fuel on Ko Lanta?
PTT and Shell stations in Saladan and Klong Dao are your most reliable options. Smaller stations serve Klong Khong, Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay but keep limited daytime hours. South of Klong Nin there are no formal stations — only roadside bottle vendors that are not suitable for a rental car. Fill up completely in Saladan before driving south. Do you actually need a car on Ko Lanta?
For most visitors, yes. Ko Lanta Yai is roughly 30 km long with beaches spread across its full length, no public bus service and no ride-hailing apps. If you plan to stay at one beach and eat at the restaurants within walking distance, a scooter is enough. If you want to explore the full island, reach the national park, or do airport runs, a car is the practical choice — especially for families with luggage.
How do you get to Ko Lanta from Krabi Airport?
Krabi International Airport (KBV) is around 75 km from Saladan, with a journey time of about 2 hours including the car ferry. Options include: renting a car at the airport and driving yourself across (you pay the ferry fare separately); booking a private transfer (roughly 2,500-2,800 THB per vehicle); or taking a shared minivan and ferry combo (around 500-600 THB per person). High-season ferry queues can add an hour or more to any self-drive option. Full step-by-step instructions are in our getting here from Krabi Airport guide.
Is there a bridge or a ferry to Ko Lanta?
As of 2026, still a ferry. Vehicles cross from Ban Hua Hin Pier on the mainland to Khlong Mak Pier on Ko Lanta Noi — a roughly 1.5 km strait — and then drive over the Siri Lanta Bridge (built in 2016) onto Ko Lanta Yai. A second bridge to the mainland is planned, with pile-driving scheduled to start in 2026 and an opening targeted around 2028-2029, but construction had not yet begun as of early 2026.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive on Ko Lanta?
Yes. Thailand requires a valid IDP (1949 Geneva Convention or 1968 Vienna Convention) carried alongside your home country driving licence. This applies to visitors from the US, UK, EU countries, Australia, Russia and most other nations. Police checkpoints in Krabi Province are common; driving without a valid IDP can mean fines and will void your rental insurance if you have an accident. Obtain your IDP before you travel — it cannot be issued in Thailand.
Can I leave my passport as a deposit?
Some local operators offer this, but you should refuse and pay a cash or card deposit instead. Your passport is your only internationally recognised ID document — you need it for hospital admission, police reports, banking and any legal matter. Surrendering it also removes your negotiating position if there is any dispute about damage when you return the car. A standard cash deposit runs 5,000-9,000 THB.
Is car rental available in low season (May to October)?
Yes. While many restaurants and beach bungalows on Ko Lanta close from May to October, the car ferry runs year-round and local car rental operators continue to offer vehicles throughout the low season, often at reduced rates with 10-20% discounts for longer rentals. The island is quieter and the roads emptier, though the monsoon brings heavy rain from May onward — factor that into your driving plans and consider whether Super CDW cover is worth adding. For anything not covered here, our full FAQ goes deeper on licences, insurance, fuel policy and deposit options.
Do you need a car on Ko Lanta?
Not if you plan to stay on one of the northern beaches and walk or use tuk-tuks. But there is no public bus and no Grab on the island, and unmetered taxis become expensive quickly. For anyone who wants to combine multiple beaches, Lanta Old Town and the National Park — especially from a base in the south — a car is by far the most practical option. See the full driving guide for road conditions and tips.
Which beach should you stay on in Ko Lanta?
Klong Dao is the top pick for families: calm shallow water, the most resort options, and a short drive back to Saladan's shops. Long Beach suits couples and solo travelers who want beach bars and a social vibe. Klong Nin is the best balance of quiet atmosphere and enough restaurants and shops within walking distance. For total seclusion with upscale facilities, Kantiang Bay is the most dramatic cove on the island, though you will need the car for every errand.
Is Mu Ko Lanta National Park worth visiting?
Yes, for the lighthouse viewpoint, the jungle Nature Trail and the wildlife — macaques, monitor lizards and hornbills. Some visitors find the foreign entry fee (200 THB adult, 100 THB child, 30 THB car) steep for a relatively compact area. Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the heat and get the best light at the lighthouse. Skip it only if you are very short on time and have already covered the western beaches.
Can you drive to Lanta Old Town?
Yes. The cross-island road (Highway 4245) is fully paved and an easy 25-30 minute drive from anywhere on the west coast. Free parking is available at the Old Town pier. It is one of the most rewarding stops on the island and pairs well with an afternoon on the east coast before heading back west for sunset.
Can a normal rental car reach the southern beaches and the National Park?
Yes — a standard 2WD automatic handles the whole island in the dry season (November to April), including the steep descent into the National Park. The road is paved throughout but gets genuinely steep south of Kantiang Bay. Two-up scooters struggle on the climbs, and the park road itself is not scooter-friendly for most riders. A rental car is the safer and more comfortable choice for families or anyone heading to Bamboo Bay or the park. Check rent a car options in Saladan for what is available.
Can you do a day trip to the mainland by car?
Yes, though it requires planning. A short car ferry from Ban Klong Mak pier is still necessary — the Siri Lanta Bridge only connects Ko Lanta Yai to Ko Lanta Noi, not to the mainland. Budget 10-15 minutes for the crossing plus potential queue time. Krabi Town (~1.5-2 hours total) and Tiger Cave Temple (~2-2.5 hours) are realistic day trips. Ao Nang is doable but long at 2.5-3 hours each way. For everything you need to plan the crossing, see our Krabi airport and ferry guide. For more island and mainland logistics, visit our full FAQ.
How long is the drive from Krabi Airport to Ko Lanta?
Allow 2 to 2.5 hours door-to-beach under normal conditions — roughly 75-85 km of driving plus a 10-20 minute car ferry crossing. In high season (December-March), the ferry queue alone can add 1-3 hours on a busy day, so plan accordingly and try to reach Ban Hua Hin Pier well before the afternoon rush.
Is there a bridge or ferry to Ko Lanta?
For now, it is a car ferry. A new bridge from the mainland to Ko Lanta Noi was approved in mid-2026 and construction contracts were signed in June 2026, but completion is not expected until 2029. The Siri Lanta Bridge between Ko Lanta Noi and Ko Lanta Yai has been open since 2016, so only the mainland crossing still requires a ferry.
How much does the car ferry cost?
About 100 THB per standard car, plus around 20 THB per additional passenger paid separately as walk-on tickets. A car with two people typically costs 130-160 THB one-way. Payment is cash only at a booth about 400 metres before the pier — no cards, no booking in advance.
Can I take a rental car on the ferry?
In practice, many self-drive tourists bring airport rentals across the ferry without incident. However, several chains — including Hertz and Avis — officially prohibit taking their vehicles on island car ferries without advance written permission. Confirm the ferry clause with your specific company before you book, not at the pier. Local Ko Lanta operators generally restrict their cars to the island unless you pre-arrange otherwise.
What if I land late at night?
The car ferry operates officially until 22:00, and the 25 km of poorly lit Highway 4206 before the pier is not a road you want to navigate in a hurry after dark. If your flight lands after about 18:00 in high season, the safest option is to overnight in Krabi town and cross first thing in the morning. Alternatively, book a private transfer — operators handle the ferry and drive so you arrive safely whatever time it is. Make sure your rental desk can service a late pickup before you book; arrange it in writing.
Is Grab available on Ko Lanta?
No. Grab and Bolt do not operate on Ko Lanta. Transport on the island is provided by songthaews (pickup-truck taxis), tuk-tuks, and a handful of local rental cars — all unmetered and negotiated. Fares for longer trips to the southern bays add up quickly, which is one of the strongest arguments for renting your own car at KBV and keeping it for your stay. For the full picture of what to rent and where to pick up, see our full FAQ.
Where can I rent a car in Saladan?
A cluster of local operators — Rent A Car Koh Lanta, Lanta Car for Rent (Panpurie), and Lanta Sky among the most established — are based in and around Saladan and along the Klong Dao road. No international chains operate on the island; those are at Krabi Airport. Most shops can also meet you at Saladan Pier on arrival or deliver free to any hotel within ~7 km of town.
How much does renting a car on Ko Lanta cost?
Expect roughly 1,100–1,200 THB per day for an automatic economy car and 1,500–1,800 THB for a standard sedan. SUVs and 4x4s run 1,800–2,200 THB, and a 7-seater van around 2,800 THB. Single-day rentals are proportionally more expensive than multi-day rates because operators absorb the same fixed cleaning and turnaround costs regardless of duration. All prices are in Thai baht; treat figures as indicative and confirm at booking, as rates vary by season.
Can the rental car be delivered to my hotel?
Yes. Delivery to any hotel within approximately 7 km of Saladan — including all of Klong Dao and Long Beach — is free with most operators. Hotels in Klong Nin or Lanta Old Town incur a surcharge of roughly 400–500 THB each way; Kantiang Bay and Bamboo Bay run about 500–550 THB each way. Factor this in if you're based in the south.
Do I need to book ahead?
Outside the peak months of December through March, walk-in rental is usually straightforward. During high season — especially Christmas, New Year, and the February–March rush — automatic cars sell out quickly, and walk-in availability cannot be guaranteed. Book ahead by WhatsApp or the operator's website if your trip falls in that window.
Can I take the rental car off Ko Lanta to the mainland?
Not without prior arrangement. Most local operators restrict vehicles to the island. Taking a car on the car ferry to the mainland (Ban Hua Hin Pier) requires advance permission from the operator and often an additional fee. If you're planning a mainland day trip to Krabi Town or the Emerald Pool, raise this at booking — don't show up at the ferry pier assuming it's fine.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car on Ko Lanta?
Yes. An IDP is legally required in Thailand, and police checkpoints do occur on the main Ko Lanta road. Carry your IDP along with your original passport and home-country license. Local operators will ask to see these at handover. For a full rundown of driving rules, road conditions, and what to expect at the wheel, read our driving guide.
